The Croatian composer Boris Papandopulo (1906-1991) has held a place in our catalog for many years. Concertante works and chamber music with piano have been presented so far, allowing us to experience this remarkable and idiosyncratic musical figure, even when he employs (relatively rarely) modern compositional methods. CPO today presents a new addition to the multifaceted profile of this outstanding artist with the release of his string quartets. These represent nearly the entirety of the creative lifespan of this Zagreb-based composer. We hear the influence of folk music, the inevitability of socialist-realist doctrine, as well as experiences with the compositional achievements of the West – all of this combines to form a grand musical "documentary." The incredibly expressive clarinet quintet, written during wartime, and the short and playful guitar quartet play an important role here.
