Harmacy (30th Anniversary expanded edition) finally makes it possible to rediscover Sebadoh’s landmark indie-rock album, released in 1996, and adds 16 bonus tracks, including alternate versions, rare B-sides, BBC sessions, and live recordings from the “Harmacy” era. Sebadoh was founded in 1986 in Northampton, Massachusetts, by Eric Gaffney and Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr., The Folk Implosion). Multi-instrumentalist Jason Loewenstein joined the band in 1989, then Bob Fay replaced Gaffney in 1994. By 1994, the band had already released five albums and had more or less shaken up the already chaotic indie rock landscape. Their albums were mostly home recordings, criticized for their rough production, but embraced by fans of Barlow’s intimate songwriting style, which owed as much to Joni Mitchell as to Bob Mould. In 1996, Harmacy, their sixth album and breakthrough release, came out, showing a Sebadoh more torn than ever: pulled between screaming punk and soft, melodic singing, brimming with deeply personal songs capable of calming even the wildest midnight ravers. Released in the wake of The Folk Implosion’s Top 40 hit “Natural One,” Harmacy became the first Sebadoh album to enter the U.S. charts and spawned the hit “Ocean.” Harmacy was hailed as one of the best albums of 1996 by Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, and NME.
