Scowl is a band whose sound perfectly reflects its name: venomous, fierce, antagonistic. A snarl best avoided. Over the past five years, this Santa Cruz, California-based band has firmly planted its flag in the hardcore scene with a ferocious sound and wild live shows. With their new album, *Are We All Angels*, Scowl seeks to channel all that aggression through an even broader version of themselves. Scowl has been greatly supported by producer Will Yip (Turnstile, Title Fight, Code Orange, Balance and Composure), who expanded their scope. But even with this more eclectic approach, the band loses none of its bite and still manages to express the anger and frustration that underpin their music. They remain deeply committed to the punk ethos and its sense of community. Much of *Are We All Angels* addresses Scowl’s recently acquired place in the hardcore scene, a community that has both embraced the band and made them a point of contention in recent years. *Are We All Angels* is the highly anticipated successor to Scowl’s debut album, *How Flowers Grow* (2021), and the acclaimed EP *Psychic Dance Routine* (2023), integrating more pop melodies and favoring softer vocals over intense screams, thus setting the stage for what was to come.
