Description

Named as a nod to Nile Rodgers (C'est chi-chi! : C'est chic!), the soul disco-psych group led by three women, Say She She, releases their second album, Silver, following an epic year. At the forefront are three incredible voices: Piya Malik (noted on El Michels Affair's Yeti Season album and as a backing vocalist for Chicano Batman), Sabrina Mileo Cunningham, and Nya Gazelle Brown. This harmonic trio formed like a classic New York tale of friends who met through music: from downtown dance floors to Lower East Side stages and Harlem rooftops. Produced by Sergio Rios of Orgone, Silver was entirely written and recorded directly to tape at Killion Sound studio in North Hollywood earlier this year. While analog recording techniques help root Say She She's sound in a foundation of tonal warmth that only tape can achieve, it is also their process of shaping the song in the moment and capturing the magic of community creativity that has seen their sound described as "a glorious overload of joyful exaltation and spiritual uplift" (MOJO) and "imbued with the wobbly post-disco spirit of early '80s New York" (The Guardian). The album title refers to silver, the element known as the metal of self-confidence and the mirror of the soul. Thus, this double album of 16 songs reflects not only their assured evolution in songwriting but also a deeper exploration of their punk-chic and feminine sensibility. Ultimately, Silver breathes eccentricity and adventure while embracing the multifaceted nature of what it means to be a modern woman.
