Enescu's music is full of charm. The seven pieces that make up Suite op.18 (1913-16) are remarkable for their delicacy and expressiveness, with a moderate modernity that is far from the innovative bursts of the time. The writing is nonetheless refreshing, inventive, and evocative, blending romantic discourse, folk melodies, passionate rhythms, rich harmonies, and dense passages that utilize the piano's wide range, contrasting with others that feature airy writing. It skillfully evokes scenes with varied atmospheres (Mélodie, Voix de la steppe, Mazurk mélancolique, Burlesque, Appassionato, Chorale, Carillon nocturne). The final piece, with its play on sound nuances and bell harmonies, is worth the detour! One must commend the magnificent playing of pianist Saskia Giorgini, who, with a round and warm sound and impeccable technique and expressiveness, brings this vivid music to life. This talent is equally appreciated in Sonata No. 3 (1932-33). Although composed during a difficult period in Enescu's life, it retains the clarity and joyful liveliness characteristic of his style. The three movements are connected by their thematic material. A vivace con brio dynamic with a bouncy rhythm gives way to a melancholic and clear andantino with impressionistic hues, leading to an allegro with a quivering fluidity that concludes nervously and brilliantly.
