And, despite all the respect we owe to the trumpeter Clifford Brown, let's not kid ourselves: it is for Sarah Vaughan's voice that we fell in love with this record. And why fall in love? Because, like in love, everything here is both deep, tender, and light, without gravity even when the hour is blue. Because this record provokes a slight intoxication, even when sober. Sarah Vaughan sings standards here but we believe we hear them for the first time. Her voice comes out as if she were on tiptoe, holding a graceful dancer's posture. Her band is magnificent in delicacy, softness, and attention to detail. This album is the lost paradise of vocal jazz, which is always good to go find, whistling and with a heart racing.
