For a musician, encountering the work of a composer or a certain aspect of the repertoire can happen at a more or less opportune moment for its understanding. This is not a problem: “You have to start them early,” said Pablo Casals about peak works that impudent adolescents approached with appetite. Thus incorporated, the work continues its underground journey over the years and emerges at the time of the ripe fruit with as much evidence as candor: “I am here! Were you waiting for me?”
Sandrine Tilly and Anne Le Bozec were 18 and 17 years old when they devoured Prokofiev's Sonata without, they believed, leaving a crumb. At that time, this work existed for them through the passion they devoted to it, the energy and instinct they offered it. Years have passed, and Sandrine's path has led her to delve deeply into the immense repertoire of Russian orchestral music under the direction of one of its most gifted representatives, Tugan Sokhiev; Anne has explored, through the repertoire of melody, Slavic poetry set to music. The works discovered in youth deepen through this vast contextualization, without denying their own identity: although aware of the Russian language, our two musicians remain French, European, and at this meeting point of cultures, a new richness can be born.
During their studies, two scores lay dormant on a corner of the piano while Prokofiev's sonata stormed: those of Paul Juon and Edison Denisov. At the time of awakening, these two dormant scores have taken a place that seems to have always been theirs; one precisely by its crossing of influences between Germany and Russia, the other by its radicality, its visionary gesture. To this surprisingly complementary triptych, the sonata of Yuri Kornakov, which is part of this program, naturally adds its imprint of Shostakovich's influence. It was therefore the time of the ripe fruit: thus a record program is born.
