What elements transform the music of a Palestinian composer or a work related to Palestine into Palestinian music? As expected, it is impossible to answer this question. This anthology presents for the first time in the history of music production works for piano all born from the pen of Palestinian composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. It thus places this music on the map of cultural awareness. Almost all the artists are unknown to international music lovers, just as it is a fact that in the early 20th century, a vibrant 'Western' music scene played an important role, particularly in the formation of Palestinian culture. Musicians and choirs were active mainly in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Nazareth, often collaborating with Jewish colleagues. The fate of the Palestinian people has also marked its cultural life. Thus, most composers had to leave their homeland and live in exile, while others became Palestinians of Israeli nationality. This anthology aims to bring to the forefront an important facet of past and present Palestinian culture and to provide reflection on it. It seeks to deliver a testimony to the diversity of the actors who embody the Palestinian complexity.
