Sababa 5 finally releases their long-promised self-titled album, featuring original instruments, built around the distinct blend of the group's Middle Eastern psych, funk, and disco groove. Sababa 5's talent for complex grooves and catchy melodies has led to a series of acclaimed singles, ranging from new interpretations of classic melodies to vocal collaborations, championed by Gilles Peterson.... As they have gradually found their own contemporary sound, creating original music together that could stand on its own across an entire album.
Through these eight songs, the group blends afro disco, reggae, jazz, funk, and a plethora of Middle Eastern traditions, while traveling through time and space, tracing a musical, cultural, and geographical line from Somalia to Iran, passing through Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, and Turkey, from the late 70s and early 80s to today. Thus, Sababa 5 creates a unique psychedelic groove that draws on the approach the Daptones have taken to work independently, write, produce, and record original music, with their own modern take on 70s soul and funk.
