Wewantsounds is pleased to announce the release of Ryuichi Sakamoto's album Coda, released in 1983, consisting of a solo piano version of the soundtrack for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. When the film was released in the summer of 1983, it achieved worldwide success, notably thanks to a superb cast including David Bowie, Takeshi Kitano, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The latter, having gained fame with the Yellow Magic Orchestra and a flourishing solo career, was tasked with composing the film's music. The soundtrack was released simultaneously with the film in the summer of 1983. It enjoyed the same success and made the Japanese composer a global icon thanks to the instrumental theme that became a classic worldwide and also the key track of Sakamoto's work. Later, the label released the film's soundtrack in a solo piano version under a new title, Coda. It also includes the tracks "Japan" and "Coda," recorded a few years earlier in 1981, two instrumentals blending ethereal ambient with subtle elements of electronic music. The album, never available outside of Japan, has become cult over the years for both the fascinating interpretation of the main theme and for "Germination," which was used by Luca Guadagnino for the soundtrack of his film Call Me By Your Name in 2017. This reissue has been remastered and includes the original cover plus a 4-page booklet with a new introduction by Andy Beta.
