When David Bowie and Iggy Pop moved from Los Angeles to continental Europe, taking trains to Berlin, Paris, and Warsaw, they reportedly discovered a new music scene very different from the thriving disco scene they had left behind. "Cafe Exil" - named after one of Bowie's favorite spots in Berlin - imagines the soundtrack that would have inspired "Low," "Heroes," and "Lodger." It’s an impressive mix of electronica, Krautrock, and experimental treats. There are key tracks from members of Can and Tangerine Dream, fascinating obscurities from the German actor Streetmark and the Italian library music maestro Piero Umiliani, the soundtrack of Herzog's Popul Vuh, and the highly collectible avant-strangeness of Annette Peacock.
