Description

Born in 1969 in Waco (Texas), Roy Hargrove quickly established himself as one of the major trumpeters of his generation. Discovered at just 17 years old by Wynton Marsalis, who became his mentor, he rapidly integrated into the elite of modern jazz, playing alongside the greatest and settling in New York after a stint at the Berklee College of Music. Despite health issues in the 2010s, Hargrove remained an essential figure until his passing in 2018, leaving a lasting mark on contemporary jazz. For the first time, his legendary performance from the year 2000 at the Bern Jazz Festival is finally being officially released. Restored from the original tapes and remastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, this recording captures Roy Hargrove at the height of his art. Surrounded by an exceptional quintet — Larry Willis, Sherman Irby, Gerald Cannon, and Willie Jones — he showcases a flamboyant, lyrical, and deeply inventive playing style, navigating between incandescent post-bop, Latin grooves, and striking ballads. This limited edition 180g LP, enriched with a booklet featuring rare photos, unpublished notes, and testimonials, is an essential document: the rediscovery of a mythical moment and a vibrant tribute to one of the most significant voices in modern jazz.
