The new soundtrack by Robin Carolan for the highly anticipated Nosferatu by Robert Eggers is an obsessive, gothic, and meticulously crafted work that draws from a vast palette of sounds, instruments, and inspirations. After their successful collaboration on The Northman, Carolan reunites with Eggers to bring the legendary tale of Nosferatu to life, infusing the film with a score as complex and nuanced as the story itself. With Daniel Pioro, one of the most promising young classical musicians of his generation, at the helm as conductor and first violin for most of the recording, the soundtrack features a vast orchestration, including 60 string musicians, a full choir, various horns and woodwinds, a harpist, and two percussionists. Carolan's inspirations for the soundtrack are as eclectic as they are profound. He drew from the works of Bartok and Coil, while films like The Innocents, Angels and Insects, and Eyes Wide Shut provided cinematic inspiration. Carolan intentionally went beyond the typical horror soundtrack, aiming to capture the melancholic and tragic elements of the story while weaving in a sense of distorted romanticism.
