Didone abandoned was one of the greatest successes of the rather brief operatic career of Leonardo Vinci, a musician with an apparently adventurous life, according to the few sources we have about him. Written for the Teatro delle Dame (Rome), the opera was performed for the first time during the carnival season of 1726. This date marks the beginning of the fruitful collaboration between Vinci and Pietro Metastasio: during the four years following Didone abandoned, Metastasio wrote no fewer than five librettos for Vinci. The success of this premiere was renewed during the live recording at the Teatro di Firenze, the first modern performance of Didone abandoned and the revival of one of the masterpieces of early 18th-century opera.
