There are scams that are worth the detour: Mitchum is not a singer, yet his astonishing vocal presence manages to transform this collection of tropical songs into a pleasant, accessible, and almost unique album. There will indeed be a second album ten years later, with original songs sometimes co-written by Bob himself, but it is this exotic album with its legendary cover that remains the best testament to the easy-going talent of its creator. A great marijuana enthusiast, Mitchum plays the lazy man on the beat, but he proves convincing on tracks like "Coconut Water," "From a Logical Point of View," which praises marrying "a woman uglier than oneself," or the classic calypso "Jean and Dinah," the album's hit single. A project that could have been a vast joke but holds up and improves with time.
