The American pianist Robert Levin presents the first complete recording of W.A. Mozart’s Piano Sonatas, recorded on the composer’s own pianoforte (Anton Walter, 1782). This 7-CD box set also includes fragments of unfinished pieces, “completed” by Levin, as well as a 100-page booklet. Robert Levin, a distinguished Mozart scholar, performs in a style that takes into account both the composer’s idioms and the formal mannerisms typical of the period. The artist’s versions of these piano sonatas are also inspired by the performance techniques and customs of the First Viennese School, which was accustomed to incorporating elements of improvisation as well as ornamentation in repeats.
