In its title as in its twelve concertos for violin(s), L'estro armonico by Vivaldi brings imagination to power. Rinaldo Alessandrini and his Concerto Italiano, augmented by high-level keyboardists, present the entirety of the collection as well as the six adaptations for keyboard(s) made by Bach.
From this opus 3 published by Vivaldi in 1711 springs the virtues of a poetic energy brought to its highest degree of expressiveness, embodied in subtle and virtuosic exchanges between a string orchestra and four, two, or one solo violin(s). The stylistic principles developed in each piece are totally innovative and inspiring for the time, the intense virtuosity, the considerable success, and quickly beyond the borders of the Serenissima. Thus, Bach, seven years younger than Vivaldi and captivated by the polyphonic dimension of these "polysoloist" pieces, adapted several for organ and for harpsichord(s). The pleasure of imagination is multiplied today by Rinaldo Alessandrini's approach, which alternates in a personal order, creating a new play of echoes, original concertos and adaptations: this new recording of the Concerto Italiano magnifies both Vivaldi and Bach – a love manifested and celebrated on numerous occasions already – and also brings to light, where there could only be talk of violins, the invigorating play of the four exceptional Italian harpsichordists Andrea Buccarella, Salvatore Carchiolo, Ignazio Schifani, and Rinaldo Alessandrini, and of the organist Lorenzo Ghielmi. Finally, this double album also allows us to identify four particularly engaged violinists of the Concerto Italiano, soloists together or in turn. One will find as much flexibility and lightness in the strings as in the keyboards, care in the definition of curves, and invention in ornamentation. It will also be realized that one knows L'estro armonico without knowing it, as some pages are famous in their original format (RV 580, RV 565, RV 230) as in their version for harpsichords (BWV 1065) or organ (BWV 596, BWV 593).
