Although Wagner did not compose organ music himself, it is not difficult to imagine his colorful orchestrations transcribed for the organ. To enrich an organ repertoire that was too ecclesiastical, 19th-century composers such as the legendary organist Edwin Lemare, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, and Franz Liszt created organ transcriptions of beloved Wagner operas like Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tristan und Isolde, and Tannhäuser. With their complex overlays and dramatic counterpoints, these operas have proven to perfectly match the splendor of the romantic organ. The resulting works not only allowed the public to discover Wagner's music in the contemplative spaces of the church but also highlighted the expressive power and grandeur of the organ. Each piece of this new album by Laurens de Man, winner of the Nederlandse Muziekprijs, reveals the organ's ability to convey the rich, polyphonic textures and the profound emotional depth of Wagner.
