Piazzolla Forever (Live at The Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord)

Description

A vibrant tribute to the master Argentine bandoneonist, Astor Piazzolla. The concert recorded at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord on June 8, 2005. Compositions by Astor Piazzolla and Richard Galliano. "The jazz approach to New Tango, like that of New Musette, has always been obvious to me. Jazz, Musette, and Tango are nourished by the same ingredients: a connection to dance, strong melodies, precise and sophisticated harmonies. And the most important thing remains style (according to Astor Piazzolla). With Adrien Moignard (guitar) and Diego Imbert (double bass), we will approach this New Tango and New Musette repertoire with a jazzistic approach, playing each concert in a completely free manner, sometimes far from the score but never from the composer's soul." --- Richard Galliano, February 28, 2022. ---Astor Piazzolla New York (USA) 1924-1937: Born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 1921, Astor Piazzolla spent the first period of his life in New York. It was there that he discovered tango, listening to records brought by his father, but also Bach, Gershwin, and jazz. At the age of ten, his father gave him a bandoneon and he studied harmony with his teacher Terig Tucci. Later, he had a decisive encounter with the Hungarian pianist Bela Wilda, a student of Rachmaninoff, and discovered a passion for the music of Bach. Love at first sight! Bela was his first Master and he learned from him not to consider music as a simple exercise, but on the contrary to approach it with passion. His musical personality, in its formative stages, emotionally distanced him from Tango; he dreamed of being a classical pianist or a jazz saxophonist. But it was by listening to Elvino Vardaro's sextet on the radio, and with it another way of playing tango, that his path took shape. This second encounter would be decisive!Richard Galliano arrived in Paris in 1975 and met Claude Nougaro, whose friend, accordionist, and also conductor he would become, until 1983. The second decisive encounter took place in 1980, with the Argentine composer and bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla, who strongly encouraged him to create the French "New Musette," just as he himself had invented the Argentine "New Tango." Richard collaborates with an impressive number of prestigious artists and musicians, including Joss Baselli, Chet Baker, Eddy Louiss, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton, Michel Portal, Michel Legrand, Toots Thielemans, Kurt Elling, for jazz; and for French song, Serge Reggiani, Claude Nougaro, Barbara, Juliette Greco, Dick Annegarn, Georges Moustaki, Allain Leprest, Charles Aznavour, and Serge Gainsbourg.Astor and Richard, two extraordinary destinies and a shared approach to music and creation that lead to an unbreakable friendship.
