Matthias Weckmann is without a doubt the most fascinating Hamburg composer of the mid-17th century. A disciple of Schu¨tz, steeped in Italian music and particularly that of Claudio Monteverdi, he excelled in every genre, achieving an impressive fusion between these two worlds. His sacred concertos are characterized by the important role played by the instruments, true partners to the singers. His sonatas follow Venetian models with their original instrumentation bringing together violin, cornet, trombone and bassoon. His organ music forms the true transition between the generation of Sweelinck and that of Buxtehude. And in his harpsichord pieces, he also approaches the style of the French suites. Over the years, Ricercar has recorded the complete works. The year of the fourth centenary of his birth thus stands as the year of the release of the first complete edition of these recordings.
