In 2016, Riccardo Muti chose to celebrate his 75th birthday with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (with which he has been collaborating for nearly 50 years) at the Salzburg festival in a program highlighting two masterpieces of the Austro-Germanic tradition, both created by the orchestra under the direction of their respective composers in 1873 and 1920: Bruckner's Symphony No. 2 and the orchestral suite Der Bürger als Edelmann by Richard Strauss. Today, Deutsche Grammophon releases these live recordings of Muti in a double album, including Bruckner's 2nd Symphony for the first time on CD.
