After more than twenty years of absence from this repertoire, American soprano Renée Fleming returns to an album dedicated to lieder, and more specifically to those of Brahms, Schumann, and Mahler. She is accompanied by her long-time partner, pianist Hartmut Höll, on Brahms and Schumann, and then by conductor Christian Thielemann and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra on Mahler. The program that Renée Fleming has chosen for this disc, which represents sixty years of the history of the lied, is traversed by a captivating network of interconnections: the same poetic works and the same enthusiasm for folk song that have inspired successive generations of composers. The lieder of Brahms, written between 1854 and 1886, serve as a transition between the cycles of Schumann and Mahler, while the latter, which form the framework of the program, also have something in common in that they each date from a turning point in their author's life: romantic encounters.
