Recorded at Van Gelder Studios in the late 1960s, *Genius + Soul = Jazz* is one of the first four albums released on the Impulse! label. The record reached number four on Billboard's Pop Albums chart and spawned Impulse's very first singles.
Produced by Creed Taylor, the album features stunning arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. For the occasion, Ray Charles switched from his usual electric piano to a "churchy"-sounding Hammond organ and enlisted most of the musicians from Count Basie's orchestra, including trumpeters Thad Jones and Joe Newman, tenor saxophonists Billy Mitchell and Frank Wess, guitarist Freddie Green, and drummer Sonny Payne.
