The Acte préalable label continues to happily reintroduce us to forgotten composers. Regarding the Polish Raul Koczalski, this is the seventh volume dedicated to him and the second focusing on his chamber music, with at least two more to come. A child prodigy, pianist, composer, and prolific concert artist, he was musically educated by his parents and notably by Anton Rubinstein and Karol Mikuli, who helped him appreciate the music of Chopin, of which he became one of the most recognized interpreters. A composer of symphonic, theatrical, vocal, and chamber works, many of which were unpublished and rarely performed, this is the case for the three trios (1914, 1916, 1918) presented here. Koczalski's style is part of a graceful late Romanticism. The works are charming, showcasing a beautifully controlled writing style, without exuberance, giving each instrument an important role in the discourse, exchanging roles between melody, accompaniment, and dialogue. Cheerful, popular, dance-like, beautifully melancholic, with delicate lyricism, energetic and sometimes tense, yet always beautifully measured, each piece captivates the music lover with its salon music qualities.
