L'anthologie Box Set

Description

The passer and poet of chamamé, a popular dance music born in northeastern Argentina, who had been living in France for nearly 40 years, passed away on August 27 at the age of 87. He had introduced us to the values of his native region, Corrientes, in the Northeast of Argentina, through music, his music! CHAMAME, this music of which he had become one of the most precious and respected ambassadors. A mixed and danceable popular music that appeared in the 19th century, in which the rhythms of the Guarani crossed paths with the mazurkas, waltzes, or polkas that Polish and Czech immigrants brought with their accordions. He played with Francis Varis, Richard Galliano, Armand Lassagne, Daniel Colin, Marcel Azzola, Jo Privat, Marc Perrone… He became a member of Les Primitifs du futur, the group formed by guitarist Dominque Cravic. He collaborated with Mercedes Sosa, Cesaria Evora, Pierre Barouh…
His first French albums (Raul Barboza, 1993, La Tierra sin mal, 1995) earned him recognition from his peers, the public, and the Grand Prix of the Académie Charles Cros. “His father, a musician of Guarani Indian origin, bought him his first diatonic accordion at the age of seven and taught him music ‘by ear.’ In the fifties, the father-son duo played this ‘servants’ music’ at dances, considered vulgar by the Argentine bourgeoisie. Since then, Raul Barboza has become the ambassador of chamané (which means ‘improvisation’), born of a blend that draws on the polka, the mazurka, the waltz, to which Raul adds the swing of jazz... But no one is a prophet in their own country, and it was in France that the musician achieved his first successes. He arrived there in 1987, without papers but with his chamané. Eleven years later, director Bruno Bontzolskis chose an excerpt from his album La tierra sin mal for the film Chacun pour soi presented at the Cannes Film Festival. A consecration.
Song of rural people while tango was born in an urban context, Barboza’s chamané is a telluric, sensual and wild music that tells of nature, the land, everyday life and respect for life… For the man places his art under the auspices of an uncompromising ethic. “Playing, like making love, is giving without asking for anything,” the artist explains. When he was little he was called Raulito el mago (the magician). Having grown up, he confirms his vocation.”
