Galaxia Tropical - Vinyle 180G

Description

Ranil’s story begins in the Peruvian Amazon, in a place where the sounds of the forest mingle with radio waves from Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador. After winning several local singing contests in his youth, he quickly realized that breaking into the Peruvian music industry, especially as an artist from the “end of the world,” would not be easy. So he focused on his studies, becoming a teacher in a rural town near the Brazilian border, and discreetly composing his first songs to the rhythm of the jungle. Years later, back in Iquitos, fate intervened in the guise of Johnny Quinteros of Los Silver’s, who invited Ranil to join the group as a singer. Their two albums, recorded in the early 1970s, became cult classics. After the group split, lead guitarist Limber Zumba and Ranil teamed up and recorded a demo that they took to Lima in search of a record label. Disappointed by the unacceptable conditions offered to him in the capital, Ranil decided to found his own label, Producciones Llerena, an unprecedented initiative in this part of the Peruvian Amazon. Surrounded by brilliant musicians such as Luis Nigro, Emilio Piña, and Betto Gaviria, Ranil created a sound that locals affectionately nicknamed “llullampeo”: imaginative, unpredictable, and wonderfully free. His percussionists created rhythms that have never been reinterpreted in the region since, and the 14 tracks presented here remain among the most eloquent testimonies of this intrepid, free-spirited, and often psychedelic ensemble. Over the years, Ranil released more than a dozen albums, often in joyful disarray. Disparate covers, erroneous labels, missing titles, chaotic management: Producciones Llerena was not destined to last. In the 1980s, as Amazonian cumbia declined and new trends emerged, Ranil reinvented himself as a radio pioneer, founding Radio Llerena in the heart of the Belén market. His loudspeakers filled the neighborhood with cumbia, commentary, and local news, making him one of Iquitos’ most recognizable voices and turning his attention to politics. Outraged by Amazonian injustices, Ranil ran several times for mayor of Belén with the Popular Action party, but he never won an election.
