As part of its reissue series, Mr Bongo shines a light on Sweet Sister Funk (1973), the only solo album by saxophonist Ramon Morris, originally released on the Groove Merchant label and produced by Sonny Lester. A former member of the Jazz Messengers and collaborator with figures like Reuben Wilson, Shirley Scott, and Woody Shaw, Morris delivers a record that has become a classic of 70s jazz-funk. Surrounded by a prestigious lineup – Cecil Bridgewater (trumpet), Mickey Roker (drums), Albert Dailey (electric piano) – he presents seven powerful and refined compositions, where jazz-funk intersects with soul-jazz in a fluid and inspired musical conversation. The album, praised for its omnipresent groove and brilliant instrumental exchanges, is also a goldmine for hip-hop producers, sampled by DJ Premier, The Alchemist, and DJ Shadow, notably thanks to its superb cover of People Make The World Go Round by the Stylistics.
