Great champions of Irish music, Peter Whelan and his Irish Baroque Orchestra introduce us to a fascinating figure from the Dublin musical scene of the eighteenth century. Who was Rachel Baptist? Little is known about this "famous black siren," except that she was an African-born soprano raised in Ireland, that she regularly sang in Dublin, London, Liverpool, and other cities, and that she performed alongside the famous castrato Giusto Ferdinando Tenducci. The program includes works that Baptist might have sung at the "Grand Concert of Vocal and Instrumental Music" that took place in 1752: arias by Handel, Pasquali (two first recordings), Purcell, as well as some additional instrumental pieces.
