For the first time, here are Quincy Jones' great film scores gathered together, remastered in their complete versions. It took a long game of clues to find and restore the original master tapes, to reconstruct the puzzle of a fragment of a life entirely devoted to writing for the screen. "I wanted to write film music from the age of fourteen," says Quincy. "That dream came true eighteen years later, in 1965, with Sidney Lumet's The Pawnbroker." Quincy Jones' cinema is seven years of great intensity, an enchanted parenthesis (1965-1972) extended by The Wiz, the film of his meeting with Michael Jackson, and above all Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple. The cinema stage was decisive in the recognition of his talent: until then crowned with a reputation as a virtuoso arranger, it was Hollywood that would establish and confirm Quincy Jones as a composer. For Quincy Jones, writing for cinema also means synthesizing his different cultures: be bop, soul, rhythm and blues, dodecaphonism, bossa. Objectively, Quincy Jones' cinematic territory is much vaster than one might imagine a priori. In its own way, this lush anthology seeks to map it out.
