Description

The musical works of György Kurtág are primarily devoted to chamber music. With this new recording, the Molinari Quartet presents the complete string quartets of this Hungarian composer, who is now 90 years old. Strongly influenced by the Vienna School (Webern-Schoenberg) and by the concerts of Pierre Boulez's Domaine musical, Kurtág wrote his first String Quartet in 1959, a work considered his birth certificate as a composer. This marked the beginning of a series of works characterized by their brevity, interspersed with quotes and tributes to composers, performers, and friends he admires. As noted by Olga Ranzenhofer, first violinist of the Molinari Quartet, Kurtág's music remains very personal, immediately recognizable, and imbued with a characteristic depth and expression.
