The Seven Last Words of Christ with interspersed Latin text. The Bishop of Cádiz in Andalusia commissioned this work from Haydn so that it would be played on Good Friday, alternating with his own meditations on the Seven Last Words of Christ. He would mount the pulpit to proclaim his text in Latin, no doubt in a style that must have been quite emphatic. Here we have included texts from the Gospels related to these seven last words of Christ, in Latin, to allow meditation while following the translation in the booklet. We have kept here the title of the work as it appears on the original score, in Italian, as is often the case for musical works of this period.
