In 1994, RICERCAR released a box set bringing together an almost complete collection of the works of Guillaume Lekeu (1870-1894), this prodigious composer who died prematurely at the age of 24. An admirer of Beethoven and Wagner, a disciple of Franck, and protected by Ysaÿe, Lekeu had, in his last compositions, opened a new path that was neither French nor Germanic. It is this journey, from the first compositions written at age 15 to the masterpieces of 1893, that this new edition invites us to follow. On this occasion, Jérôme Lejeune has completely revised and expanded the introductory text, which offers a chronological analysis of the works. Listening to these compositions in this order helps one understand how the composer’s talent developed, and the quotations from excerpts of his abundant correspondence make it possible to better sense the state of mind of this fascinating and deeply moving young man, who had placed at the head of his Adagio for Quatuor d'Orchestre this simple phrase: “The pale flowers of memory...”
