Derniers quatuors à cordes op 130 et grosse fugue op 133

Description

The Brentano Quartet delivers the third volume of Beethoven’s Last Quartets on æon in an album bringing together Op. 130 & 133. The relationship between form and language seems to haunt the entire writing of Beethoven’s String Quartet in B-flat major Op. 130. The composer is indeed wrestling with this enigmatic question of the relationship between our intimate experience of music and the meaning of musical composition. In the Grosse Fuge Op. 133, by contrast, Beethoven, as a visionary, asserts his unshakeable faith in a world as will in the face of threat and chaos; the relevance of struggle marks the structure and character of each page of the quartet, among the composer’s most inspired. The sharpness of the line, the clarity of the discourse, the intensity of the affects are impressive. Brilliant and virtuosic, the Brentanos also possess superb mastery, which has made them famous and which finds all its power in this edition of the final volume.
