"The transcription of the Goldberg Variations was done with perfect respect for the original text. There is no change in pitch or rhythm. The transcription is based on an 'orchestration' of the text for four string instrumentalists. Like an orchestra, the quartet is not always required in its entirety: variations for two, three, or four instrumentalists follow one another. This redistribution of the material aims to bring out new lines, often blended in the uniform sound territory of the piano or harpsichord. The Goldberg Variations are a model of polyphonic writing, a synthesis of the arts and contrapuntal practices of Bach: the fugue, the canon, the French overture...
