After almost three decades of absence, the underground artist Prophet returns with a new album blending funk, R'n'B, and lo-fi! Prophet is an underground funk musician from the SF Bay Area, who this year has only credited his name on a single record, an obscure LP that he self-produced and pressed, titled Right On Time (1984, Treasure Records). Full of stunning leftfield boogie, this album is now only available for around a hundred dollars online, and changes hands frequently. Prophet is the first to point out that his journey has been longer than that of many artists. But there have been fans who kept the flame of his first album alive. Stone Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf listened to Right On Time in the early 2000s and was immediately intrigued. He remembers. For his big comeback on stage, Wolf invited Prophet to open for Snoop & Dam Funk in 2013, and introduced him to producer Mndsgn. Together, Prophet and Mndsgn began to create what would become Wanna Be Your Man.
