Pond is one of the most versatile, inventive, and accomplished groups in the avant-garde of psychedelic rock. Their last four albums have been demonstrations of order and brevity, with 10 ideas always contained within about forty minutes. But on Stung!, they joyfully, wildly, and deliberately lean into the expansiveness of a double LP, drawing inspiration from the spirit of Tusk and Sign 'O' the Times by concentrating 14 songs into the freest and most splendid hour of their recording career. Stung! features some of Pond's most glorious rock songs, but also some of their least rock moments, wrapped in psychedelic drapery and funk liveliness. In this epic, as in Stung!, Nick Allbrook speaks of our modern collective paradox of being disappointed or even inconsolable by a world we know better than any previous generation, yet also being in awe of it and (sometimes) of each other. There are so many reasons to cry and so many reasons to marvel. Can’t they all, as Pond suggests with Stung, be reasons to sing?
