Description

Before Daptone, there was Desco, and before Desco, there was The Poets of Rhythm. In the 90s, while our ears were being assaulted by grunge and pseudo soul, a group of young Germans were instead mocking fashion, revisiting funk while drawing inspiration from old records of the genre. In tribute to the leaders of the modern soul movement, Daptone Records is proud to present a collection of tracks by The Poets of Rhythm (whose producer and guitarist, JayWhitefield, is also the creator of Karl Hector & the Malcouns), selected by the label and the band themselves. Although their first recording dates back now 20 years, this anthology celebrates the musical journey that began with the exuberant rebellion of “Funky Train” through to the hypnotic explorations of “Discern and Define”, and for the very first time, the mysterious “Path of Life” - previously unreleased.
