To mark the 125th anniversary of the death of Johannes Brahms (April 3, 2022), the Deutsche Grammophon label presents Brahms’s Symphonies performed and recorded by William Steinberg. These are released for the first time on CD and digitally, remastered from the original tapes. Steinberg was recognized as one of the world’s greatest interpreters of Brahms’s symphonies. After recording a First Symphony in mono for Capitol in 1956 and a Fourth Symphony in stereo for Everest in 1960, he launched the present Brahms cycle for Command Classics with the Second. Nominated for a Grammy (Classical Album of the Year), it was described as the “best Brahms Second in stereo” by the New York Herald Tribune. “A sensitive, authoritative and effective interpretation” of the First followed in 1962, matched in “interpretive verve and superbly transparent stereo” (High Fidelity) by the Third. The Fourth, recorded in 1964, received the same praise for its “luxurious sonority,” the New York Times.
