Northern Flowers presents a newly remastered digital edition of the Piano Quintet and the song cycle The Last Spring by Boris Tchaikovski, featuring the composer himself on piano. Boris Alexandrovitch Tchaikovski (1925-96) was a remarkable composer of the second half of the 20th century. Supported by renowned performers such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Kirill Kondrashin, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Igor Oistrakh, and the Borodin Quartet, Boris Tchaikovski composed 4 symphonies, 4 instrumental concertos, several symphonic works, 6 string quartets, numerous chamber and vocal works, as well as various music for film and radio. A student of Shostakovich, Shebalin, and Myaskovsky, Boris Tchaikovski created his own style and individual musical language. The two works featured in this recording can undoubtedly be considered milestones in Tchaikovski's career, representing new periods in his oeuvre. The Piano Quintet for piano, two violins, viola, and cello was premiered by the composer and the Borodin Quartet in 1963, and represents his largest chamber work. The vocal cycle, The Last Spring (1980), came after a four-year period during which he wrote only a little music for films, marking a new phase in his works, and was premiered by the musicians heard on this recording.
