Pile’s ninth album, Sunshine and Balance Beams, is an intense meditation on work, mental wear, and the absence of respite. Rick Maguire, singer and principal songwriter, explores the obsession with productivity, disillusionment with meritocracy, and the inevitable finitude of all things. The whole album takes the form of a dark fable: a journey through a dark forest in search of an uncertain light. Musically, the album moves between tension and release, balance and dissonance. The guitars rumble like storm rain, the drums unfold in tortuous rhythms, and the synths and strings composed with Eden Rayz evoke an almost cinematic drama, inspired by Chopin or Bernard Herrmann. This sonic richness reinforces some of the band’s most accessible compositions, while preserving their emotional power and stage intensity. Recorded in Pawtucket (RI) with sound engineer Miranda Serra, mixed by Seth Manchester (Lightning Bolt, Mdou Moctar), and mastered by Matt Colton (Aphex Twin, Swans), Sunshine and Balance Beams also marks the band’s first release on the Sooper Records label. A dense, inhabited album, it continues to make Pile one of the most singular bands on the American indie rock scene.
