A year and a half before my sixtieth birthday, my family and I suffered a hard and tragic blow when my son Dorian passed away. Although still shaken to my core, a way forward seems to be to allow music to play a constructive and healing role. I have therefore recorded Bach's Fifth Suite and Kodály's Solo Sonata to form the album Scordatura for a release in October In Memoriam II. This first In Memoriam for my beloved Dorian consists of a reissue of the three greatest pieces by Schubert for violin and piano and the wonderful Trockne Blumen Variations, as Schubert played a significant role in his life as a singer and music lover. This is the text that Pieter Wispelwey wrote to accompany this very special release. There is not much to add to this First In Memoriam. Just that the record includes previously released material, drawn from the series of six volumes dedicated to the transcription of the music of Schubert and Brahms. In addition to the aforementioned Trockne Blumen, it contains Sonata D.574, Rondo D.895, and Fantasy D.934.
