Written for the first 9 over a period of only seven years, between 1798 and 1803 (the 10th will be written later in 1812), they perfectly illustrate the journey towards the artistic maturity of the composer, from the influence of Mozart and Haydn in the first three sonatas to a more complex and modern language, of which the "Kreutzer" sonata is a perfect example.
