To anyone else but him, the departure of a major group could have been fatal. But not to Peter Gabriel. After elevating progressive music to the rank of art by taking it to the limits of rock opera, this extraordinary singer/musician used his popularity to build an empire, primarily artistic, which he fuels by producing rare artists for his label (and in his studios…) or by releasing after pop albums that are not always recognized for what they truly are, but are very popular for the most part. The songs from his ten studio albums certainly deserved a best of, wisely placed in stores while a live DVD of the artist is already topping the best-seller lists.
From the delicate pop of Solsbury Hill or Here Comes The Flood to the sampled thumps of Shock The Monkey or Sledgehammer, passing through necessary awareness even if not sufficient (Biko), all the shades of the sound palette of painter Gabriel are represented here. Whether adventurous to see or cerebral and dark, the approach of this Peter, who loves to provoke the wolves, remains a model.
