With this new album, Rainbow Shell, the pianist firmly takes a pop path, a western “dream pop,” in the footsteps of the tireless traveler, the adventurous Katherine Mansfield. Always in search of light, the novelist hurried to live and write short forms, short stories most often, powerful, rarely sentimental. Striped with blues guitars and Rémy Decrouy’s samples, always supported by the percussion of her other traveling companion, Jean-Luc Difraya, the arrival of cellist Eric Longsworth in the group colors the whole with new nuances: romantic sensitivity, romantic commitment? Highlighting Perrine’s desire to let the inner, primal and cathartic singing take over, Mathis Haug’s rough voice confirms this tendency, thus recreating a dreamlike and intimate universe. When she raises her voice and plays keyboards, Perrine catalyzes the energy, like a shaman. She dares to face the unknown and ventures to discover what one is without always knowing it. Driven by a thirst for freedom and spirituality, the pianist tirelessly asserts herself through the music her instrument (piano) makes resonate, while refusing the ghetto of “woman jazz musician,” of “women’s music.” After Mandragore & Noyau de pêche, Délubies, Vertigo Songs, this musician has gradually managed to establish her style, and this latest album, Rainbow Shell, provides further proof of it.
