It has been half a century since Pavlov's Dog burst onto the thriving progressive rock scene in the early 1970s. Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, their intoxicating blend of rock, classical music, and folk has turned them into cult legends. The band has experienced numerous lineup changes and internal strife over the years, leading to long breaks between album releases. But today, David Surkamp, the lead singer, primary songwriter, and last original member of Pavlov's Dog, continues to carry the banner high, accompanied by a group of accomplished musicians who honor the band's reputation. This year, exactly 50 years after Pavlov's Dog recorded their legendary debut album Pampered Menial, the band plans to release a new album of original material and embark on an extended concert tour for the 50th anniversary. Additionally, the Essential Recordings 1974 – 2018 box set brings together five recently remastered recordings from their dynamic career in a deluxe reissue box. A bit of history: Pavlov's Dog is a seven-member band founded in St. Louis and quickly caught the attention of several major record labels thanks to a series of self-produced demos (later released as The Pekin Tapes). They made their recorded debut with Pampered Menial in 1974, followed by At the Sound Of The Bell two years later. The hallmark of Pavlov's Dog during these early years was David Surkamp's unique, high-pitched, vibrato-laden vocals — the ballad "Julia," perhaps the band's most famous song, being a classic example. Although they shared the stage with the biggest rock bands of the time (Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, Journey, and many others), they never truly broke through commercially in the United States; their third album Has Anyone Here Seen Siegfried? circulated as a bootleg before finally being officially released years later. The studio sessions for this album heightened tensions within the band, leading to a temporary split in 1977. In 1990, the unique project Lost In America brought Surkamp and fellow founding member Doug Rayburn together. But it wasn't until 2004, after the original lineup reunited for a 30th-anniversary concert, that the second chapter of Pavlov's Dog's career truly began. The band has been touring regularly since. Two live recordings have been released - Live and Unleashed (2011) and House Broken (2016) - as well as two highly acclaimed studio projects: the celebrated 2010 comeback Echo & Boo and the most recent Prodigal Dreamer. The Essential Recordings 1974 - 2018 box set is available in two different versions: a standard edition CD box set and a deluxe LP box set. The limited edition LP box set includes five 180g vinyl LPs on different colored vinyl.
