Paul Robeson - Voice of Freedom: His Complete Columbia, RCA, HMV & Victor
Description
Paul Robeson, African-American bass-baritone, stage and film actor, American football player, lawyer and civil rights activist, openly opposed racism, colonialism and social injustice. A graduate of Rutgers University, a scholar of world cultures and speaker of more than 20 languages, he worked tirelessly to break down political and racial barriers and to build bridges between the peoples of this world. However, with the advent of the Cold War and the Red Scare that followed World War II, the political climate changed. Doors began to close for Robeson, with concert halls and radio stations excluding him. In July 1950, the U.S. State Department revoked the passport of the blacklisted artist, preventing him from pursuing his international career as a singer and actor. But the international public continued to honor and call upon him, and he found technologically advanced and effective ways to reach his communities around the world.Today, his remarkable voice and unmatched stage presence live on in sound recordings and films. This 14-CD edition is the first to contain the entirety of his recordings for Columbia, Victor and HMV from 1925 to 1947. All of his American recordings have been meticulously restored from the original tapes and discs, and 25 studio recordings — along with his complete historic recitals in New York and London in 1958 — are presented here for the first time on CD.The richly illustrated 160-page book, with essays by Shana L. Redmond and Susan Robeson, pays tribute to a 20th-century cultural icon.Buy Paul Robeson - Voice of Freedom: His Complete Columbia, RCA, HMV & Victor at the best price
