The sessions that produced this album marked the first of only two studio albums to feature Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan together. It is essentially the same instrumentation Mulligan used in his famous piano-less quartet with Chet Baker, but with Desmond's alto in place of Baker's trumpet. A very lyrical player, Desmond's sound matches Mulligan's deep baritone saxophone sound perfectly, and their interplay is very satisfying.
