Most people know Medusa as the mythological Gorgon with a petrifying gaze. PARADISE LOST has made her the emblem of their fifteenth album, because, beyond the monster, she embodies a deeply philosophical symbolism. Intrigued, Nick Holmes explored the figure of Medusa and was particularly interested in her nihilistic connotations: to look away would be to refuse to face the idea that the universe is meaningless, a thought already advocated by Jack London and familiar in the band's lyrics. Thus, PARADISE LOST invites us to contemplate the beauty of the ephemeral and of nihilism, as long as we are still on earth.
