An unexpected polyphony: this is what, above all, impressed those who were fortunate enough to hear Fernando Sor play the guitar. No simple chord accompaniment, or linear melodies: his guitar was not only virtuosic, he had transformed it into “an instrument of harmony,” according to the Revue Musicale (Paris, 1833-34). This collection is undoubtedly Sor’s most important contribution to 19th-century guitar music. The guitar used for this recording is an original instrument made in 1817 by the Rovetta Brothers. Paolo Cherici studied guitar with Ruggero Chiesa and lute at the Schola Cantorum in Basel with Hopkinson Smith.
