Accompanied by the talented pianist and friend Denis Kozhukhin, the rising cello star offers us an exceptional program centered on the Cello Sonata composed by Rachmaninov in 1901. With a certain romanticism, the album takes us back to the artist’s musical roots. It establishes a surprising parallel between Rachmaninov’s music and that of his Spanish contemporaries Casals, Granados and De Falla. The record highlights both a nostalgic essence and warm melodies, like the enchanting “Vocalise” taken from Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata, the touching lullaby “Nana” by De Falla, or the dance “Orientale” by Granados and his Danzas espanolas. Winner of the Tchaikovsky Prize, Pablo Ferrandez has already performed in the world’s greatest concert halls alongside conductors such as Zubin Mehta and Christoph Eschenbach, and alongside classical music superstars such as Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer and Khatia Buniathsvili.
